Business and Enterprise

Our specialist status as a Business and Enterprise centre has made a satisfactory contribution in a number of areas. This impact has been evidenced in terms of standards and achievement; quality of teaching and learning in the specialist subjects; curriculum provision and leadership and management. The promotion of enterprise capability (especially social enterprise) is a strength of the specialism. This is especially evidenced through a strong international relationship with Malealea (Lesotho).

Specialist Schools

First launched in September 1992, the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust affiliation scheme is growing rapidly, and now has a membership of over 5000 schools . As well as schools, membership is open to institutions which are non-profit making and education driven.

Affiliation to the SSAT – membership of one of the world’s leading school networks – offers multiple opportunities for us to find out about, and draw from, high quality teaching and learning in the secondary system. We also gain full access to the dedicated site: www.schoolsnetwork.org.uk.

Eco-Schools

The school gained the Eco-Schools award in February 2008 with significant support from Sheffield Hallam University.

The Government in England wants every school to be a sustainable school by 2020. The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) launched their Sustainable Schools Framework in 2006 when the Secretary of State for Education, the Rt Hon Alan Johnson MP set out challenging long-term aspirations for schools to mainstream learning about sustainable development issues and sustainable practices into everyday school life.

Eco-Schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a framework to help embed these principles into the heart of school life.

Healthy Schools

The school achieved Heathy Schools status in September 2008. Healthy Schools is an long-term exciting initiative that promotes the link between good health, behaviour and achievement.

We want all students to be healthy and achieve at school and in life. We believe that by providing opportunities at school for enhancing emotional and physical health, we will improve long term health, reduce health inequalities, increase social inclusion and raise achievement for all.

Our commitment as a ‘Healthy School’ is based around the five Every Child Matters outcomes. These are to:

  • Be healthy
  • Stay safe
  • Enjoy and achieve through learning
  • Make a positive contribution to society
  • Achieve economic well-being
