KS4
Learning, 14-16
Aims
Our aim is to provide a curriculum that offers breadth, balance and challenge underpinned with a determination to prepare students for life after Year 11 (Post 16).
We combine resources both on the school site and through the Sheffield College VSP (Vocational Skills Programme) to ensure our offer meets the needs of all our students.
All students follow a core offer of subjects. These include English, Mathematics, Science, PE, PSHE, RE and ICT. These courses comprise a range of GCSE and vocational subjects.
One of our key objectives is to make sure as many students as possible leave The City School with 5 GCSEs including English Language and Mathematics as this is a key requirement of all progression routes Post 16.
In addition to this we offer students an opportunity to develop their aptitude and interest through an “Options” process which allows students to choose up to four additional subjects. This is designed to allow students, in consultation with school and home, to personalise their education in Key Stage 4.
The subjects offered are listed below and comprise a range of GCSE and vocational courses. GCSE courses are awarded an A* to G grade and finish with a terminal examination (at the end of Year 11) although coursework components contribute to a certain percentage of the overall grade. Vocational courses are not exam based and are completed through coursework and extended units of study. These are awarded at either level one (D – G GCSE grade equivalent) or level 2 (A* – C GCSE grade equivalent).
This year we are lunching the new Diploma in Creative and Digital Media and Business, Administration and Finance.
We always give careful consideration to the most appropriate route students should study based on all the data available in school. This is discussed with students and parents and helps ensure the curriculum undertaken meets the needs of the individual student.
