KS3

Learning, 11-14

As a BSF school these are exciting times; the process of school redesign means that we are currently introducing changes as well as building on what we already do well. KS3 is a rapidly developing area which will continue to evolve. This is a snap shot of current provision.

Challenge and security

When pupils join us at age 11 our aim is to provide them all with a challenging and secure environment for learning. Our curriculum and pastoral provision is designed for this purpose.  Some key components are:

·         The Skills for Learning Curriculum

·         A wide range of extracurricular activities open to all

·         A learning support team providing  support for vulnerable learners

The removal of Sats as an end of year examination has opened up new possibilities for KS3. So far this year we have delivered two exciting and highly successful Stop the clock days for year 9. Others are planned for yrs 7 and 8. These provide opportunities at KS3 for project based learning; contact with business people and experts from a diverse range of ‘real life’ contexts. Curriculum developments will continue in this area.

Improving performance in English and maths will remain a key focus for all teachers and pupils. Good literacy and numeracy are crucial for life beyond school; both in the work place and in all aspects of independent adult life.  The introduction of the new Functional Skills examinations could be an opportunity for pupils to gain a qualification in these crucial areas before they begin study at KS4

Essentially KS3 is about building a firm foundation for success at 14-16 and beyond. We do this in partnership with parents and many external agencies. We want our pupils to enjoy their education and gain satisfaction from what they learn developing a sense of how they can contribute to their communities and civic life.
