MFL

Keystage 3

Aims

We aim to enable students to make progress in understanding aspects of the French language and also in exploring cultural similarities and differences of life in France and other French-speaking countries throughout the world.

Activities/ areas covered – key aspects of the curriculum

In Y7 we build on language experience at KS2 as well as ensuring that those students who may have spent time on tasters and languages other than French are not disadvantaged. We ensure students understand what skills are needed to succeed in language-learning and make clear the link between foreign languages and English. We further develop skills of listening and speaking and begin to explore reading and writing in the foreign language. This reinforces skills required for all language-learning, including English literacy.

In Y8 and Y9 our students are placed in sets according to their performance in Y7. Each class moves at an appropriate pace and level, ensuring that all are supported and challenged to reach their highest potential.

Most lessons involve some use of ICT: our classrooms all have interactive whiteboards and students enjoy demonstrating their skills to others. We subscribe to up-to-date websites, which can be accessed from home with our password. We currently have a suite of 15 computers, which is used for independent learning.

Opportunities

For several years we have run an MFL trip in July. In 2008 we went to the Loire Valley and this year we are going to Paris.

Keystage 4

Aims

In KS4 we aim to enable all students who opt for language-study realise their highest potential, either at GCSE (full-course) or NVQ. The City School languages department was one of the first schools in Sheffield to provide this vocational qualification. We are very proud of all our results.

What qualification can be achieved?

The GCSE is examined by 40% examination (in Listening and Reading tests) and 60% controlled assessment and can lead to AS at college or sixth-form. The NVQ is awarded according to performance demonstrated in each student’s portfolio and can be either level 1 or level 2. Employers recognise the qualification and it is possible to study for a higher level while at work or in college.

Activities/ areas covered – key aspects of the curriculum

There are 4 key contexts of the KS4 curriculum: lifestyle, leisure, home and environment and work and education. The NVQ course provides experience of the type of languages likely to be encountered in a business context  and supports the school’s specialist status.

Opportunities

In Y10 some students have chosen to apply to join a project which allows them to do work-experience in the French town of Amiens.
