Key stage 3

 

Aims

 

To enable students to understand what the mass media is, and begin to understand how media impacts on their own lives. To explore the Media Industries in Sheffield and look at the different vocational opportunities available in the Creative and Media sector. To learn about key media concepts: Representation, Institutions and genre. Many of the key skills taught in Media are transferable and can be used in English and other key Curriculum areas.

 

Activities-areas covered

·         Magazines- design a magazine front cover and contents page to a professional standard of production

·         Produce a magazine article using student photography and image manipulation in photo shop

·         Introduction to film units covered in key stage 4

 

Opportunities

 

Media often provides exciting opportunities for students to work with professionals from the creative and media industries: a sector which now employs over 160,000

people in South Yorkshire. In addition there are often opportunities to participate in film and other creative media projects and competitions. Students may also be invited to help facilitate media projects in other curriculum areas.

 

GCSE Dual Award

 

Aims

 

The course will provide extensive and meaningful coverage of media theory and practice. It will enable students to learn about real media products and industries in a rapidly expanding sector of employment. Media will also provide students with a range of key transferable skills relating to teamwork, initiative, enterprise and analysis which are highly valued by employers.

 

Qualifications

Students can obtain two GCSE grades in Media Studies.

 

Coursework/Examination

The course is 60% controlled assessment and 40% examination.

Opportunities

 

Students will get the opportunity to participate in film production projects and to conduct active sessions of creative journalism. They will also have the opportunity to write for professional magazines.
