Art

Aims

The City School Art Department is a vibrant, progressive and creative area of the school; our aim is to provide a sense of security and an atmosphere of respect out of which student’s creativity can flourish.

Students are encouraged to create imaginative and individual pieces of art through diverse and exciting schemes of work. The department is staffed with a variety of subject specialists that contributes to the delivery of a broad and balanced curriculum.

Keystage 3

At Key stage 3 students are introduced to a wide variety of skills and techniques, these are developed with references to different cultures, traditional and contemporary artists and designers.

Keystage 4

Art at Key stage 4 is both diverse and exciting, students of all abilities are encouraged to explore their skills and strengths on an individual basis. Students have experience of clay, textiles, 3-D, printing, drawing and painting. We offer both well established Btec and GCSE courses to suit different learning styles. Btec is a level 2 course and the equivalent to 4 GCSE’s at A-C level. The past 2 years have seen students achieving a 100% pass rate. The GCSE pass rate is one of the highest in the school, last year it was 66% A-C.

Opportunities

Our Art experience goes beyond the classroom, many students are involved in after school workshops and lunchtime clubs, pupils are also encouraged to look at Art in the wider context with visits to galleries, workshops and exhibitions. Many students continue to study and enter Art based careers after study at The City School. As part of the Business and Enterprise status we have recently launched a Creative Art Company to promote students entrepreneur skills in a creative context.

‘Art is how we remember and celebrate, how we impart our knowledge and beliefs and how we generate beauty no matter the time and place in which we may have lived’
